Online Course
Lipid Oils, Carrier Oils & Plant Butters for Skincare, Beauty & Health
Take out the guesswork, master the formula
From week one through week seven, you'll build your skills one step at a time, combining basic chemistry with hands on learning and experiments to help anchor the important stuff.
By the beginning of week three, you'll have mastered the essential chemistry you need to know to work with oils and butters effectively including how to read a fatty acid chart. From here, you'll start learning about oils that have their own, unique to them fatty acid, like pomegranate, castor and calendula seed oil.
Week 3 wraps with a lesson on the healing fraction of oils, or the unsaponifiable portion of the oil.
Week 4 gets started with a lesson on butters, those lovely saturated oils. Butters range from oily feeling to dry. "Dry" butters moisturize and protect without leaving your skin feeling oily. Really perfect for hand salves, dog paws and just about everything else.
You'll learn about how you can look at the geographical zones where an oil producing plant grows, and take a pretty educated guess at it's basic fatty acid structure (its a really neat connection).
Is a dry oil the same as a drying oil? You'll learn what makes these two types of oils so very different from each other, how to use both types of oils effectively, and why they aren't in fact interchangeable.
Ever wondered if oils from the same plant family - for example rosehip seed oil and blackberry seed oil - have similar characteristics? Well if you weren't before you are now, and the short answer is yes, more than you might think.
And that's just a few highlights. In seven short weeks, you'll transform how you work with and your relationship to oils and plant butters.
So somewhere between week 3 and week 4 this all "clicked" for me. While I am learning new things from every lesson it all makes sense now. I am easily understanding the chemistry, I am easily understanding unsaponifiables, I understand what makes a whole oil, I understand how to tell based on profile what an oil would be good for.

The fatty acids tell a story...
Lipid oils are the true oils made up of predominantly fatty acids with a small unsaponifiable portion where you find the vitamins, minerals and antioxidants.

These are all the oils you use as carrier oils and base oils, the saturated butters and the exotic highly nutritious oils like the goopy green tamanu oil and the brightly pigmented, antioxidant packed sea buckthorn oil.

Frequently Asked Questions About the Course

Q: How many hours do I need to complete the course?

A: That varies! But here’s what I can tell you.

  • The course is 7 modules with 4 lessons per module.
  • Each lesson contains a slide lesson in video format with a voice-over.
  • The slide lesson in a click-through format so you can spend as much time as you need on specific slides.
  • The slides are in a downloadable format so you can print them out, study offline and create your own binder or study book for the course.
  • Worksheets are provided with core concepts from the lesson. Each week on the call, we will go through the worksheet and discuss the concepts from the lesson.

Q: I’m not sure if I can make the live calls, will they be recorded?

A: Yes! All the calls will be recorded and will be posted in the course portal.

Q: With so much going on, I’m not sure I will have the time for the course right now…is there a set time I have to access it?

A: No, you have lifetime access to the course so you can access it anytime. It is structured as a home study course so that you can access it on your time and as your schedule allows.

And, when I teach a live round for new students, as an alumni you are invited to join the calls and discussions at no charge. An alumni invite always goes out in the weeks leading up to a new live round.

Q: How often do you teach the live rounds?

A: Twice a year in the spring and fall.

Q: I’m not a professional formulator but I am interested in these oils, will this course be too advanced for me?

A: No, not at all. I find the chemistry fascinating and the course is structured so that you can go deep into the chemistry and nuance of the individual fatty acids for advanced formula, or you can study the oils from a more macro level, look at the relationships, experience how different fatty acids give the oils a different feel. Lipids decoded is both a Micro and Macro study of these oils.

Q: What if I start the course and find it’s just not for me, can I get a refund?

A: Yes! I offer a 14-day money-back guarantee if you find it's not right for you. I know we all have different learning styles and needs. It is important to me that you find the right fit for you. The 14-day money-back guarantee begins when we open module 1, not when you purchase the course.

Q: I’d like to have a record of my studies, do you offer a certificate of completion?

A: Yes, once a student completes all the modules and completes a short assignment, I will send a certificate.

Q: I have more questions, can I talk to someone about the course?

A: Yes absolutely, send an email to and Olivia will get you set up with a call.

"I completed the Lipids Decoded course in 2017. I found this course full of great information and in depth facts about many of the different carrier oils. I also bought the book 'Power of the Seed' which is great!  With the course and book, it has inspired me to buy many carrier oils which I test and mix at home now. I just love them on my skin! I understand the fatty acid profiles and by looking at these can tell what the oil will feel like and how it will penetrate the skin. I just love this information and would one day love to work with the oils I make. I will always remain a part of the Lipids Decoded community! Thanks Susan!"

I love studying with Susan. She has created groundbreaking material that is fun to learn. Her work has been critical to me to uncover my special passion using lipids in combination with other additions to a multitude of topical preparations.

If you’re serious about developing your skills with carrier oil selection or even more complex Lipid based products, Susan Parker’s workshops and materials can’t be beat!!!

Finished - I just finished the course, and I want to say thank you soooooo much, Susan. You've put together a stellar course. I read the book a while back and this course just added to the knowledge I obtained from that book. I have really enjoyed the course and will be taking some of your other courses in the future for sure.
